New Adult Contemporary

New Adult Contemporary is a new genre for you. What were some differences you experienced between Paranormal and Contemporary while writing Torch? Did you find Contemporary to be easier or harder to write or is it all the same? Overall, what’s the verdict on New Adult Contemporary?

Hi! Yes, Torch is my first New Adult Contemporary book. I have written a New Adult Paranormal (Charmed) but Torch was my first NA Contemp. And now I have also written Tease and Tempt. :)

Up until writing Torch and the other novels in the Take It Off series I had written only Paranormal; New Adult but mostly Young Adult. But I wanted to break out of that and expand my wings a little. I wanted to offer something in a different genre to the readers. Plus, I honestly think writing new things helps keep my mind fresh and makes me a better writer (but I guess the readers can decide that, lol).

I did notice some differences between the Paranormal/Contemporary genres. For one, the Contemporary is easier to write (for me). It’s a little more simple in plot… meaning the story doesn't have to be complicated. At first, this was actually hard for me. I kept thinking “Where’s the story?” but the story (for me) is in my characters, it’s in how they find each other, how they overcome whatever they face to be together. It’s also about heat and steam and romance.

I think I had to readjust my mind and thinking in order to make the switch. With a Paranormal, you have a lot to keep track of. You have a lot of explanations (for the Paranormal) to contend with. You have to remember it all, make it make sense and somehow not too farfetched.

The Contemporary also takes a lot less time for me to write. My Contemporary books have all been shorter than my Paranormal books as well.

The verdict? Are you asking me to chose one genre over the other? I can’t. I love all my characters, all my worlds and all my books. LOL! I would be happy writing either genre and I will likely continue writing both. For now, I am writing Contemporary but I will be finishing the Death Escorts series which is Paranormal… after that… well, you just never know what I might come up with. :)

7. “Don’t worry, Katie. I don’t bite. Unless you want me to.”
6. “That wasn’t feeling you up. When I feel you up, you’ll know it.”
5. “I felt like there was something tethering us together. Or maybe it was because of the way you sighed and leaned into my chest the night I carried you to my bed. Your scent still lingers on my sheets, Katie.”
4. “Feel free to use my shirt as a tissue.”
3. “The thought of anyone else’s hands on you drives me insane. Now I get to be your first. And your last.”
