Out of Play Blog Tour: Author Interview + Giveaway

Welcome to my stop on day two of the Out of Play Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. I am stoked to be a part of this tour because Nyrae Dawn and Jolene Perry are an awesome duo that I absolutely love! I can't get enough of their characters and Bishop and Penny were no exception!

For today's stop, I've got both the amazing Nyrae Dawn and Jolene Perry here for an interview as well as a tour-wide sponsored giveaway with lots of awesome-ness to be won! Stick around and don't miss a second of any of it! ;p

About the book:

Title: Out of Play
Author: Nyrae Dawn & Jolene Perry
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Release date: August 6, 2013

Rock star drummer Bishop Riley doesn't have a drug problem. Celebrities—especially ones suffering from anxiety—just need a little help taking the edge off sometimes. After downing a few too many pills, Bishop wakes up in the hospital facing an intervention. If he wants to stay in the band, he’ll have to detox while under house arrest in Seldon, Alaska.

Hockey player Penny Jones can't imagine a life outside of Seldon. Though she has tons of scholarship offers to all the best schools, the last thing she wants is to leave. Who'll take care of her absentminded gramps? Not her mother, who can’t even be bothered to come home from work, let alone deal with their new tenants next door.

Penny’s not interested in dealing with Bishop’s crappy attitude, and Bishop’s too busy sneaking pills to care. Until he starts hanging out with Gramps and begins to see what he’s been missing. If Bishop wants a chance with the fiery girl next door, he’ll have to admit he has a problem and kick it. Too bad addiction is hard to kick…and Bishop’s about to run out of time.

Welcome to Books Over Boys, Nyrae and Jolene—I’m so excited to have both of you here, today! Jo – We’re STOKED :-D First off, tell us a little about yourselves and your upcoming release, Out of Play.

Jo – It’s about this really cool, tough chick that plays hockey and has an ego to match Nyrae’s character. (Nyrae will no doubt do a much better job of answering this question)

Nyrae: LOL. Jo’s answer was good! I think OUT OF PLAY has a little of everything. There is some angst. Bishop is dealing with a very real, very serious problem. But we also wanted it to be funny. I mean, a tough, hockey playing girl from Alaska and an out of place rock star from LA? Yeah… there were definitely some laughs in there.

Q. Out of Play is the second book (Dizzy being the first) that I’ve read that both of you have co-written. Could you guys describe that process for me? I’m so intrigued by it and I have all these questions. For example, how does the dialogue work? Do you guys have an outline of where you guys want the story to go and then you guys write your way there or…? I’m sure it’s all simpler than I really think but break it down for my reader’s mind. ;p

Jo – Both books started with a general idea. OoP started with an idea Nyrae had a while ago about wanting to write a famous guy who finds himself in a small town where no one knows him. It morphed into Out of Play. So. We have this rough idea, and we do a loose sketch of where the book is going to go, and then we quasi-plan a few chapters ahead. She wrote Bishop, I wrote Penny. So I’d jump off from her last chapter and into mine. I get final say on everything “Penny related” and she got final say in everything “Bishop related” – including dialogue. But it’s surprisingly easy to write dialogue for the other character once you get to know them.

Nyrae: What Jolene said ;)

Q. What was the hardest part of writing Out of Play?

Jo – We made a decision to do something really awful near the end. We actually didn’t write for a few days because we were like – are we really going to do this? And the answer was that it had to be done to move the story forward and for our characters to grow the way we needed them to. That was the hardest for me. Oh. And the WAITING for publication…

Nyrae: What Jo said! LOL. Kidding… kind of. I’ll add a little. The sad thing at the end was definitely hard but for me it was also Bishop’s struggle. I wanted it to be real and honest as I could make it. I wanted to do it justice because addiction is a very serious problem. Oh, and the Alaska stuff for me. Jo had to help me a lot there. Otherwise instead of snowmobiles they would have ridden “those things that go through the snow”. Kidding again… kind of ;)

Q. Nyrae, what’s your favorite thing about Penny? Also, what’s one of your favorite lines from her?

I love how strong she is. I love that she knows what she wants. I love that she’s not afraid to say what she wants. I love that she doesn't take Bishop’s crap. She’s a strong girl and I think we need more of those!

As for a favorite line, it’s kind of silly but I think it’s fun. Bishop is having a little panic attack because of the crowd. He and Penny go outside and he’s sitting in her truck trying to do the breathing exercises he’s been taught to do to help. Penny’s reply is so her—funny and sarcastic…and it helps!

I still want to touch him, but I’m afraid to. I reach in like three times until I remember what works for me. “Punch something. That breathing shit never works.”

Q. Jolene, what’s your favorite thing about working with Nyrae?

That she gets just as excited as I do over the little things. That she’s so NICE. I mean, that seems like a weak-sauce compliment, but it’s totally not. She really is one of the nicest people I know. We have a BLAST together. Without ever having met me, she let me crash at her house for like 3 or 4 nights.

Q. What’s one thing that readers would be surprised to find out about you?

Jo – That I’m a ridiculously picky eater. I don’t know. I sort of put all of myself “out there” for people to see… A perfect day for me would be one where I wake up in a tent, go rock climbing and end the day in four inch heels at an opera…

Nyrae: First… see her answer? The whole tent and rock climbing thing?? THAT is why she had to fix a lot of my Alaska stuff. LOL. She’s way cooler and tougher than me ;) As for my answer… hmm… I don’t know. I say picky eater a lot too because, hello?? I don’t eat bread because it grosses me out but I feel like I just keep stealing all Jolene’s answers. LOL.

Q. If Bishop and Penny were superheroes, what would their names be?

Jo – Lucky Penny – she already thinks she’s a super hero ;-)

Nyrae: The Man—you know, because he’s totally “The man”.

Thank you both so very much!

Nyrae: Thanks for having us!!!

About the authors:

Writing has always been Nyrae Dawn’s passion. There have been times in her life where she wasn’t able to chase that dream the way she desired, but she always found her way back to telling stories.

One of her loves has always been writing about teens. There’s something so fresh and fun about the age that she loves exploring. Her husband says it’s because she doesn’t want to grow up. She doesn’t think that’s such a bad thing and luckily for her, he doesn’t either.

Nyrae gravitates toward character-driven stories. She loves going on emotional journeys with characters whether it be reading or writing. And yes, she’s a total romantic at heart and proud.

Nyrae resides in sunny Southern California with her husband (who still makes her swoon) and her two awesome kids.

When she’s not with her family, you can be pretty sure you’ll find her with a book in her hand or her laptop and an open document in front of her.

She writes for Entangled Publishing, Grand Central Publishing and is self-published.

Nyrae is represented by Jane Dystel of Dystel and Goderich Literary Management.

Jolene grew up in South-central Alaska. She’s lived in Anchorage, near the Alyeska ski resort, on a cabin on an island on a lake, and then in a boring old house.

Jolene kissed a boy on her high school graduation night. One she’d wanted to kiss for a long time. They got married two years later, have built two homes together, survived military deployments, law school, student loan debt, and two children.

Jolene plays the guitar, takes pictures, and loves to hike. She doesn’t like rivers, but loves the ocean. She loves to fly, but gets motion sick. Her ultimate vacation would be to sail through the deserted islands in The Bahamas. Two years ago, she got that wish when her parents retired on a sailboat.

She taught high school French when she was only a few years older than her students, and then taught middle school math with her degree in political science and French.

She spends grocery money on designer fabric, shoes, and books.

Jolene cannot express how many times she wished she could write a whole novel. And now she has. Many times. Life is good.

RockStar Book Tours

  1. Alright, first off, when I saw this post on my newsfeed I was struck because the cover of this book looks identical to the people on the cover of Reincarnation by Suzanne Weyn. (Here is a link to the cover picture on Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/book/photo/2507213.Reincarnation) I've analyzed and I swear, it's the same people in the same pose. Weird!! But it's one of my FAVORITE covers so I'm totally cool with having two versions of it :P
This book looks wonderful! Possibly a little sad but in a good way. I'm looking forward to picking it up!! It's also great to hear from the authors about their creations. Thanks for taking the time to share and for getting the word out about this book through the tour :)

  2. Great interview! I can't wait to read Out of Play (I've had it pre-ordered since May). Of course now I'm really nervous about the ending of the book! I'm such a fan of Nyrae & Jolene! LOVE their books and Dizzy was a great collaboration. I recently got to meet both of them at an Indie Author signing in San Francisco and it was awesomesauce! It was cool to get Dizzy signed by both of them too! :-)

  3. I can't wait to read this one! It sounds awesome and just adorable. Plus, I LOVE that cover! Great author interview! Thanks for sharing! :D
