Author Interview + Giveaway: Beth Hyland

Title: Fall into Forever
Author: Beth Hyland
Publisher: Self
Release date: March 8, 2014

A girl with a past she can't remember. A guy with a past he can't forget.

Ivy McAllister had it all. Perfect boyfriend. Perfect life. Perfect future. Or so they tell her. Because one night, on a dark country road, a fiery crash changed everything…and Ivy can’t remember what happened.

Now, two years later, at a new college far from home, she tries to regain control of her life, but her plans don’t include a tattooed, motorcycle-riding, indie music-obsessed guy with his own sorority girl fan club.

Jon Priestly is the hottest guy at Pacific State University. Just ask his groupies. But with a dark past he must keep hidden, he shuts himself off emotionally and trusts no one. That is…until he meets a broken girl with haunting green eyes and secrets of her own.

Ivy shouldn’t be attracted to Jon. They’re wrong for each other in every possible way. Yet as they spend time together, something about him—everything about him—feels so right.

But when threats from her past make her question what little she does remember, Ivy must decide whether to run again or trust the one person she can’t live without.

Welcome to Books Over Boys, Beth! I’m so thrilled and excited to have you stop by my blog today. ;p Let’s start off with some icebreakers, shall we?

Q. What is a song for which you thought you knew the words and later found out that you had them wrong?

Since I grew up with horses, whenever I hear Flo Rida’s Low, I sing it: "Apple Bottom jeans, boots with spurs…”

Q. When was the last time you did something for the first time? What was it?

Don’t judge me….but since it’s legal in my state now, I smoked weed recently. My siblings and I are trying to get my mom to try it. LOL

Q. If you were to perform in the circus, what would you do?

Equestrian vaulting – standing on the backs of horses and doing tricks
--

Tell us a little about yourself. Who is Beth Hyland?

Q. If you had to describe yourself using three words, they would be…

Positive, introspective coffee-drinker

Q. What’s your most favorite book of all time? Like, ever? ;p

I LOVED Twilight. I found many of my online friends through a fan forum and that’s when I started writing. Two of my besties from those days are my muses and beta readers.

Q. When you’re not writing, you’re ____?

Trying to get my daughter to clean her room.

Q. What’s one thing that readers would be surprised to find out about you?

Although my characters ride motorcycles, the only time I rode one (a dirt bike), I crashed and broke it.
--

*rubs hands together* Now, let’s talk about writing and books, eh?

Q. What about writing captivates you the most?

I love putting myself in the shoes of characters I create and imagining what they’ll do. It’s like getting to live more than one life.

Q. You are debuting with your Contemporary New Adult, Fall into Forever, this March. How would you describe it in one sentence?

The new girl in town, who is running from a past she doesn’t remember, falls for the last guy she should, a bad boy with a past he wants to forget.

Q. What are you most excited about for Fall into Forever’s release?

I fell in love with Jon and Ivy while writing the book. I hope readers will too.

Q. For those who are unfamiliar with Ivy, how would you introduce her? What’s Jon’s favorite thing about her?

At the start of the book, Ivy thinks she’s a broken person and isn’t sure if she’s got what it takes to put herself back together again. She wonders if she should just run again.

However, when Jon meets her, he sees strength and spirit and courage. He sees a confidence in her that she doesn’t see in herself.

Q. What are five of your favorite things about Jon? What’s one of Ivy’s favorite lines from him?

There are so many things about Jon that I love. Aside from the fact that he’s bad-boy hot and really smart (Chem major), he 1) lets Ivy take control at times because he sees that’s what she needs, 2) sacrifices what he wants because it means more to him that she’s happy, 3) makes her waffles, 4) is willing to break the law to make things right, and 5) is into indie music and is inspired by Ivy to finish writing a difficult song from his childhood.

He cups my jaw and whispers in my ear. “I want you, Ivy. So fucking bad. But you need to be completely sober, because afterward, when you’re lying there in the dark, I want you to know it was your choice. Your decision. No one else’s.”

Q. What do you think is the hardest part of writing? What was the easiest part of writing Fall into Forever?

The hardest part about writing is wondering if it’s ever good enough for anyone else but me to see it.

Writing the last part of the book was the easiest. The very last scene has been in my head from the very beginning.

Q. What can we expect next from you this year? Are there any current works in progress that you can shed a little light on?

I’ve got a few things in the writing pipeline, but until I get a little further along with them, I’d better not say too much. I don’t want to jinx myself.

Q. Lastly, before you go, can you share a snippet from Fall into Forever with us?

Without blinking, he holds me at arm’s length and lets his gaze travel slowly over my body. Every inch of me tingles. And I mean every inch. My toes. The backs of my knees. Between my legs. My stomach. My ears. My scalp. All my senses are on complete overload and for a split second I feel myself teetering. If he wasn’t holding onto me, I’d have to place a hand on the pillar to steady myself to keep from falling again.

He’s a good six or seven inches taller than I am, which is impressive, since I’m five foot eight. I’m used to looking guys straight on, or at least almost straight in the eye, so it’s a weird sensation for me to crank my head up like this. He’s got black gauges in his earlobes the size of a medium-tipped Sharpie. A bruise is starting to form under his left eye. Guess he took a few blows after all.

I should say something to fill the awkward silence between us, but nothing that’s not completely stupid comes to mind. Nice right hook or Good fight don’t seem appropriate.

His expression darkens, and I’m filled with a sense of unease again. It takes me a minute to realize he’s looking at the bloody jacket I’m holding and not me.

His female entourage has had enough of this interruption and tries to pull him away, but he shrugs them off. “Go inside,” he tells them without turning around. “I’ll be there in a minute.”

One of them protests, “But—”

“Go.”

None of them look too happy, but they do as they’re told. I’m struck by the fact that I was a lot like them just a short time ago—doing what a guy wanted me to do even if it wasn’t what I wanted. This break in focus snaps me out of la-la land and I regain some of my lost composure.

They file past us into the house, and each of them gives me the once-over. I want to tell them, “He’s all yours, ladies. Don’t know him. Don’t want to know him.” Instead, I straighten my spine and try to ignore my body’s insane physical reactions to this complete stranger. I can’t let a guy like him affect me this way. Not only does Jon Priestly sell drugs, he’s also got a violent temper. If I were in the market for a boyfriend right now, which I’m not, I’d pick a smart, sweet, law-abiding guy any day of the week.

Thank you the most for being here today, Beth! It’s been such a blast and I’m definitely looking forward to reading Fall into Forever!

Thank you for having me!

  1. Great interview. I can relate with her, both as a reader and author, about putting yourself in the character's shoes.
