Author Interview + Giveaway: Only Between Us by Mila Ferrera

Title: Only Between Us
Author: Mila Ferrera
Publisher: Self-published
Release date: September 3, 2013

Last semester, Romy escaped from an abusive relationship with the guy she’d thought was the man of her dreams. This semester she’s putting herself back together, determined to reclaim her passion for art and for life. When she signs up for a painting class at the local art co-op, the possibility of passion becomes very real—in the form of her teacher, Caleb. Both mysterious and seriously hot, Caleb bares his soul on his canvases, and Romy’s fascinated by what she sees.

Caleb is just trying to keep his head above water. Caring for his traumatized, unstable sister is getting harder every day, and his paintings are so dark and bleak that no one is buying. Teaching classes at the co-op is no longer enough, and now he’s going to have to sell more than just his art to the wealthy, sex-starved women in his classes. But when Romy comes along, she makes everything more complicated. She sees the truth in his paintings -- a truth no one else has realized, until now.

Romy and Caleb might have a real shot together -- one that could heal them both. But when ghosts from their pasts re-emerge, determined to keep them apart, will they be strong enough to hold on to each other?

About the author:

Mila Ferrera lives in New England, where she has a family and a job and does various normal, everyday things, all while plotting novels in her head. She has a passion for writing new adult/adult romance featuring psychological twists and tortured heroes. Her own psychology internship involved plenty of consultation, but alas, no sexy Swedish doctors, which is why she had to make one up. SPIRAL is her first novel. ONLY BETWEEN US, her second new adult romance, will be available 9/3/13.

Welcome to Books Over Boys, Mila! First off, tell us a little about yourself and your upcoming release, Only Between Us.

Thanks for having me! A little about me … I love reading and writing new adult romance, and I happen to be a psychologist, so my books so far tend to include plenty of psychological twists. In Only Between Us, the heroine is Romy, a counseling graduate student who’s escaped an abusive relationship and is trying to find her passion and confidence again, and the hero is Caleb, an artist struggling to take care of his sister, who was traumatized as a teenager. Romy and Caleb each have what the other needs in order to heal, but they’re facing obstacles that aren’t easily resolved or brushed aside. Pardon the painting pun.

Q. Only Between Us seems to involve some raw and gritty real-life issues. What was the hardest part of writing OBU?

The more challenging parts of writing OBU were actually the painting scenes! The parts that deal with the gritty real-life issues actually feel more familiar and comfortable to me. I love pouring emotion into a scene or showing how trauma can truly haunt someone, but when it comes to describing an artist at work? I had to do a lot of research.

Q. OBU is your second release, Spiral being your first. Were there any differences or similarities in getting them published?

They’re both self-published, and that’s been really fun. I guess I feel like Only Between Us is very solidly in the new adult genre, whereas Spiral is actually closer to being an adult romance in terms of the age of the characters. But also, I’m learning as I go, and trying new things each time.

Q. For those who are unfamiliar with Romy, how would you introduce her? What would you say is Caleb’s favorite thing about her?

Romy wants to help others and she’s determined to be strong enough to provide that help, which means learning how to take care of her own needs—and those needs include passion for art, for life, and … for Caleb, as it turns out.

Romy tends to say things that get right to the heart of the matter, even when others might stay on the surface. Caleb often struggles to find words to express himself—he’s much better with images and color—so she throws him off-balance. But he can’t get enough of it.

Q. What’s your favorite thing about Caleb? What’s one of your favorite lines from him?

Caleb is a seriously wounded soul, and yet he hasn’t lost his gentleness, or his ability to love.

“The paint is both a disguise and a big reveal, and in it I hide and bare my soul at the same time.”

[BOB: Oh my gosh, I loved that -- so poetic!]

Q. What book are you currently reading?

I just finished Flat-Out Love by Jessica Park (LOVED), and I’ve just started Slammed by Colleen Hoover.

[BOB: I haven't read Flat-Out Love yet but I totally adored Slammed! I hope you love it! Happy reading!]

Q. Can you share anything about what you’re working on at this time or what’s next?

My next book will come out in a few months and features Daniel, who is Caleb’s best friend and fellow artist (Daniel is a secondary character in Only Between Us). He’s quite different from Caleb. In Daniel’s own words: “Caleb bares his soul on his canvases. I bare everything but.”

[BOB: Wow! I totally loved that, as well! I can't wait to meet him!]

Q. Lastly, before you go, can you share a snippet from Only Between Us with us?

Here’s the very beginning of the scene depicted on the cover …

We are inches apart. Outside, there’s a clap of thunder so loud that I feel it beneath my feet. The lights flicker. Caleb’s gaze meets mine. I lay my palm on his cheek, his stubble rough against my skin. He seems like a wounded animal tonight, shrinking from anything that might hurt him, but as my fingers brush the hair at his temples, he lets out a long breath.

Then, mirroring my movements, he puts his hand on the side of my face. His thumb skims my cheekbone. “What are you doing?” he whispers.

“I’m not sure. What are you doing?”

“I have no idea.” He ducks his head, brushes his lips over mine, and pulls back quickly. The slightest touch, but I feel it in my bones. His eyes lock onto my mouth, and his other hand rises to my face, framing my cheeks with his palms. He tilts my head up. “Say ‘no,’” he says quietly. He touches my lips with his again, lingering a bit longer, sending a wave of intoxicating warmth flowing through my body. “Say ‘stop it, Caleb.’”

Thank you so much, Mila! After reading your responses, I especially can't wait to dive in and meet Romy and Caleb! Also, that snippet totally got me going! I loved, loved, loved how well the cover captured that moment!
