Teaser Tuesday (1)

I've seen this meme around a lot but I haven't ever participated so this is my first week in doing so. This meme is brought to you weekly by MizB over at Should Be Reading :)

Anyone can play along, just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title and the author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
My Teaser

"I feel most like I'm in that weird state of half-asleep, half-awake I get when I've tried to sleep past noon, when I know I should get up, but my mind starts wandering and I'm sure I can never get back to sleep. Even if I do slip back into a dream for a few moments, I'm mostly just awake with my eyes shut."
-Page 19 (ARC), "Across the Universe" by Beth Revis

I just had to share this teaser because right when I read it, I immediately thought - OMG! I know exactly what she's talking about! Do you ever feel like this sometimes? :)

Book Review: Firelight

Title: Firelight
Author: Sophie Jordan
Publisher: HarperTeen (September 7th 2010)
Genre: Young Adult
Series: Firelight #1
Pages: 323
A hidden truth.
Mortal enemies.
Doomed love.

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki—a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.
Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.
Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide.

My $0.02

I started this frickin' awesome book early this morning around 12:30 AM and I just finished it right now at 10:00 PM on the dot! WOW! I couldn't put this book down! I was messing around this morning, when I decided to pick it up and read it. I kind of have this thing where when I first buy or receive a book, I have to start it ASAP or else the excitement of starting it drains, LOL - anyone else kind of feel like that? Hmm, maybe it's just me!

I love how Jordan begins the story with an intriguing hook! I flipped through the first few pages so quick! In the beginning, there's this chase going on - where Jacinda (Jace), our MC, and her friend Azure gets chased by hunters - now for me, I always believe that no matter what, the MC can't die, there's just no story without them, so I knew Jace wouldn't die, but Jordan throws her into this situation where it feels like she possibly could; which leads her to her first meeting with Will, Will Rutledge *swoon* Their first meet is...enchanting! There's no other word for it - the fear on Jace's eyes to the wonder in Will's was so captivating!

The world of draki (pronounced drak-ee, if any of you were wondering, LOL, cause I was) is like nothing I've ever read before! I had a hard time picturing Jace go through her shifting forms between human and draki. The way Jordan describes how Jace's wings would fold back within her; that was a little difficult for me to imagine! But the world was still fascinating, nonetheless!

Jacinda is one very strong and tough heroine! She holds her own! But as she begins to interact more and more with Will, you can just imagine how difficult it was for to keep her draki within her because Will stirs her inner draki to life. The relationship between Will and Jace is so sweet and precious! There's this one particular scene where I could just imagine the difficulty for Jace to flee from Will and the confusion on his face - it all played out in my mind like on a big screen! It was almost hard to watch! Towards the beginning of their relationship, it kind of seems to be like it isn't much of anything; random conversations in study hall to make-out sessions in the secluded hallways - definitely nothing there! Towards the end, their relationship comes full circle as Will confesses his "like" for her! I just have to say, I squirmed so loud when I read that line on that page! It was so cute! As the book comes to a close, I thought for sure that there would be some sense of a happy ending, woaah did I guess wrong! Jordan literally has you on the road leading into the sequel!

*cue the music* Dun duuun duuuun! Enter Cassian! Throughout the book, we don't see very much of this prince! Although that was fine with me, because then there's more Will and Jace time *__* but towards the end, I become very curious of him. I want to learn more; as I'm sure Jordan will definitely shed some light on him in Vanish (Firelight #2). He reminds me somewhat of Renier Laroche from Andrea Cremer's Nightshade. He seems to be tough and top-notch on the outside, but when he's with Jace, we see little glimpses of vulnerability in him. I would surely like to see more of that. Although, I'm pulling for Will and Jace, I thought for sure that Jordan was going to throw in a kiss there between Jace and Cassian!

Also, the relationship between Jace and her sister Tamra, reminded me very much of the relationship between me and my sisters. They don't get along very well at all - they even despise each other sometimes, but they still had this very deep sisterly bond that I noticed every time. Tamra doesn't have the ability to manifest into draki form like Jace - so she has never fit in in their world. I also caught the relationship between Will and Xander (ooh, he's definitely one to watch out for) and Cassian and Corbin - they're cousins of each other and their relationship is one of "I'm better than you!" Sort of, lol!

Incredible debut! Had my eyes locked into it! I couldn't stop reading it! The storyline, the characters, the love story...Will Rutledge ♥ - awesome! I cannot wait for Vanish; I want my hands on a copy NOW! I've convinced my niece and nephew to read it and I suggest you do the same!

Book Review: The Iron Daughter

Title: The Iron Daughter
Author: Julie Kagawa
Publisher: Harlequin Teen (August 1st 2010)
Genre: Young Adult
Series: Iron Fey #2
Pages: 359

Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.
Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.
My oldest sister just finished this book last night, so I had asked her if she wanted to write a review for it, so here's

Her $0.02

Meghan and Ash's love-hate relationship comes full circle in the sequel to The Iron King. As I commented in my review of The Iron King, I was yearning for more Meghan-Ash alone time. How I wished that Meghan was constantly by Ash's side, through every passageway, every tunnel, every single perilous trod they traveled through and escaped from in the Nevernever. My heart thudded, ached and pined for Ash right alongside Meghan's. Every glimpse of Ash was worth the wait as I turned the pages!

Julie Kagawa did not disappoint her readers in delivering a sequel that surpassed its predecessor, in all aspects imaginable! The Nevernever erupted in vibrant colors that captivated my imagination from beginning to end, with every mythical creature you could name and more, to the iron fey that brought to mind the mechanical wiry machines of The Matrix. I loved the stunning white unicorn...such a pristine addition to all the other creatures mentioned in the book! Scenes from Tom Cruises' old movie, Legend, came to my mind. How strangely coincidental that I mentioned to my sister while reading The Iron King that this was the The Matrix version of Faeryland, only to stumble upon the author's mention of The Matrix on page 326 when she references the "deadly storm of iron bolts" flying toward Meghan "Matrix style".

This is such a classic love story, intriguingly re-told through the world of Faery: ill-fated star-crossed lovers, the winter prince and the summer princess, falling desperately in love with one another. The epitome of extreme polarity is reflected in Meghan's essence of summer and Ash's winter being, each drawn to each other in a world filled with magic and glamour wherein nothing is truly what it seems. The intricately woven plot was beautifully depicted in the way Meghan, a half-breed of human and faery, daughter of the Erlking himself, Oberon, becomes the iron daughter, wielding her power over iron glamour and ultimately saves the realm of Faery, as well as maintaining the balance of the human realm.

Notice, I did not mention Robin Goodfellow as of yet. Puck, the loving and devoted best friend, seems to get the short end of the stick in this love triangle. Nonetheless, Meghan discovers her feelings have intensified and grown toward Puck in a way that she probably always knew existed. Even though I never questioned that Meghan would choose Ash in the end, the pain still throbbed heavily right through my chest when Puck pleaded with her, "Don't do this. I can't follow you this time. Stay here. With me." (pg. 355)

Meghan's choice had been perfectly clear all along. It was and has always been Ash. And Ash's heart beat only waits for one, Meghan. In his words, "You're here, and the only dance I want is this one." (pg. 307)

The Iron Daughter - in one word: perfection!

Left me completely breathless and enchanted…

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Tempest Rising
by Tracy Deebs
Publication: May 10th 2011 by Walker Books for Young Readers
Synopsis taken from Goodreads
A contemporary paranormal romance out just in time to ride the wave of the newest creature craze: mermaids!

Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her—and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance.
I'm really looking to this one because I haven't read a mermaid book yet and it seems like this one has to do with that! Awesome! Well, it's Wednesday - what are you waiting on?

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Have you read this incredible book by Harper Lee?

Lawyer Atticus Finch defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic, Puliter Prize-winning novella, a black man charged with the rape of a white woman. Through the eyes of Atticus's children, Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with rich humor and unanswering honesty the irrationality of adult attitudes toward race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s.
Well, if you have not, then you totally should! Anyway, I just wanted to do a post about my copy of this awesome book! I had to read this as a requirement my freshmen year of high school. At first, I was confused reading it, but my teacher broke it down into parts that made it easier to understand. Anyway, here's a few pictures of the book notes that I had made in my book.

First off, here's how my copy looks now. My friend borrowed it, and it looks like there was some kind of liquid that was spilled on the cover.

Few of the pages that I highlighted.

So, looks like I need to go out and get myself a new copy, doesn't it? :) LOL! Happy reading!

Books with Bite: ARC of Vesper by Jeff Sampson Giveaway!

Emily Webb is a geek. And she’s happy that way. Content hiding under hoodies and curling up to watch old horror flicks, she’s never been the kind of girl who sneaks out for midnight parties. And she’s definitely not the kind of girl who starts fights or flirts with other girls’ boyfriends. Until one night Emily finds herself doing exactly that . . . the same night one of her classmates—also named Emily—is found mysteriously murdered.

The thing is, Emily doesn’t know why she’s doing any of this. By day, she’s the same old boring Emily, but by night, she turns into a thrill seeker. With every nightfall, Emily gets wilder until it’s no longer just her personality that changes. Her body can do things it never could before: Emily is now strong, fast, and utterly fearless. And soon Emily realizes that she’s not just coming out of her shell . . . there’s something much bigger going on. Is she bewitched by the soul of the other, murdered Emily? Or is Emily Webb becoming something else entirely—something not human?

As Emily hunts for answers, she finds out that she’s not the only one this is happening to—some of her classmates are changing as well. Who is turning these teens into monsters—and how many people will they kill to get what they want?
This book isn't released until January 25th, 2011 by Balzer + Bray / HarperCollins :) So, Savannah over at Books with Bite is hosting an ARC giveaway! A chance for you to win a copy of this highly anticipated novel! Jump on over to this SPREADSHEET to enter! This awesome giveaway ends December 17th! Good luck fellow readers and happy reading!
