Daily Dose (10)

This weekly meme is hosted by Good Golly Miss Holly :)

I don’t want to think about how different my life would be if I had never met you.

Sometimes, music is all you need.

I’m not perfect. Every now & then, I fall apart.

“Even if the path is a little blurry, keep walking. You’ll focus in when you know what you want. Then the picture of your life will be crystal clear.”
Just don’t ever give up.

“Where did I go wrong, I lost a friendSomewhere along in the bitternessAnd I would have stayed up with you all nightHad I known how to save a life”#nowplaying: The Fray - How To Save a Life

We loved with a love that was more than love.

If there was one thing to be counted on, it was how eagerly the mortal ignored what they didn't want to see. The truth passed right by, and never once did they open their eyes.
-(ARC) Page 57, A Touch Mortal by Leah Clifford

I've been reading this book for a while. It's a borrowed ARC from Lauren over at 365 Days of Reading! She sent this book to me a while back and I apologize for keeping it for so long, but I promise I'll try to get it back to you ASAP! *___* As for the quote, I ran across it yesterday when I was reading and it just stuck! I believe that it's true in so many ways!

Speaking of A Touch Mortal - IT'S RELEASED TODAY! FREAK the FREAK OUT! ;) OMG OMG OMG! Are ya hyperventilating yet?! GO BUY IT!

Here's the cover again! BIGGER!

Eden didn't expect Az.
Not his saunter down the beach toward her. Not his unbelievable pick-up line. Not the instant, undeniable connection. And not his wings.
So long, happily-ever-after.
Now trapped between life and death, cursed to spread chaos with her every touch, Eden could be the key in the eternal struggle between heaven and hell. All because she gave her heart to one of the Fallen, an angel cast out of heaven.
She may lose everything she ever had. She may be betrayed by those she loves most. But Eden will not be a pawn in anyone else's game. Her heart is her own.
And that's only the beginning of the end.
Today's also the book bday for HAVEN by Kristi Cook! *jaw-drop!* I KNOW, RIGHT?! OOH.MMM.GEE! SQUEEEE! *runs out of breath, DIES!*

One month into her junior year, sixteen-year-old Violet McKenna transfers to the Winterhaven School in New York’s Hudson Valley, inexplicably drawn to the boarding school with high hopes. Leaving Atlanta behind, she’s looking forward to a fresh start--a new school, and new classmates who will not know her deepest, darkest secret, the one she’s tried to hide all her life: strange, foreboding visions of the future.

But Winterhaven has secrets of its own, secrets that run far deeper than Violet’s. Everyone there--every student, every teacher--has psychic abilities, 'gifts and talents,' they like to call them. Once the initial shock of discovery wears off, Violet realizes that the school is a safe haven for people like her. Soon, Violet has a new circle of friends, a new life, and maybe even a boyfriend--Aidan Gray, perhaps the smartest, hottest guy at Winterhaven.

Only there’s more to Aidan than meets the eye--much, much more. And once she learns the horrible truth, there’s no turning back from her destiny. Their destiny. Together, Violet and Aidan must face a common enemy--if only they can do so without destroying each other first.
What more can I say?

Woot! Woot!

Another book birthday! Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton! WOW! I was mentioning to my sister the other day that I have not bought a single February release! Am I bad? Don't tell on me! ;) It's just that I promised myself to not buy a single book until I read at least five books off my shelf! I really need too! It's bad BUT I have enough self-control to not run to B&N, haha! *pats self on the back*

Ari can’t help feeling lost and alone. With teal eyes and freakish silver hair that can’t be changed or destroyed, Ari has always stood out. And after growing up in foster care, she longs for some understanding of where she came from and who she is.
Her search for answers uncovers just one message from her long dead mother: Run. Ari can sense that someone, or something, is getting closer than they should. But it’s impossible to protect herself when she doesn’t know what she’s running from or why she is being pursued.
She knows only one thing: she must return to her birthplace of New 2, the lush rebuilt city of New Orleans. Upon arriving, she discovers that New 2 is very...different. Here, Ari is seemingly normal. But every creature she encounters, no matter how deadly or horrifying, is afraid of her.
Ari won’t stop until she knows why. But some truths are too haunting, too terrifying, to ever be revealed.

Guest Post: Laura Kreitzer on Phantom Universe & Human Trafficking‏

Today, I have here on my blog, Laura Kreitzer - the author of the Timeless Series and the Summer Chronicles. She is here to talk about human trafficking!

• • • • • • • • • • • •

Hello Literary-Folk!

My name is Laura Kreitzer, and I’m the author of the Timeless Series and the Summer Chronicles. This week I would like to alert everyone on a colossal crisis that’s gone unnoticed in the world: human trafficking. That’s why I’ve asked hundreds of blogs to be involved with spreading the word on this issue that’s become close to my heart.

As an author, and someone whose life is put in the spotlight, I keep most people at a distance. Only a handful of my friends know the whole me and the events from my past. But this week I’d like to share with you a part of myself that the outside world doesn’t see (and a part of me I don’t like to share). I was emotionally abused for five years by someone I thought loved me, my mind beaten into submission. Though the turmoil I went through doesn’t penetrate as deep as someone forced into slavery on the worldwide market for human trafficking, I can sadly relate in some ways: imprisoned, my life dictated down to what I wore, ate, where I went, whom I spoke to, where I worked, when I slept, bending to his every whim. He did not sway, even when I cried through some of the more traumatic things he had me do. I was a slave in my own home. In my desperation for freedom, I held out a gun and asked him to just end my suffering. I was desperate.

I can’t even imagine how many women (and men) in the world are in a similar situation. What’s even worse, I had it mild compared to the children that are sold for labor or sex. Surprisingly, the good ol’ U.S.A. is reported to be the host to two million slaves. Did you know this? Because I certainly did not; not until I was preparing to write my newest novel: Phantom Universe. The main character, Summer Waverly, was stolen as a child and sold as a slave to the captain of a modern-day pirate ship. From a loved child who only knew “time-out” as punishment, to being whipped into silence was something I knew nothing about. So I researched deeply into human trafficking and the psychological effects of torture of various types that one would endure in these circumstances. I felt shaken at my findings and knew I had to tell Summer’s story.
(Read a sneak peek here.)

A storm began to brew in my mind; transforming, morphing, twisting, and expanding into this massive, black cloud. I had to bring this tragic atrocity to the forefront. My own emotional experiences, mixed with the research I did on human trafficking, made me feel an intense connection with Summer, and to all women who’ve been through this kind of brutality. The cloud ruptured and rained all over my computer one day. It took one month to write Phantom Universe, the first in the Summer Chronicles. I was so consumed by the story that I wrote nearly nonstop, only breaking for necessary tasks like eating, showering, and occasionally—very occasionally—sleeping.

Though the book I’ve written would be classified as Science Fiction, or as I’d like to call it, Dystopian, the emotions and psychological aspects are not Science Fiction—they're real. Reviewers have said many amazing things about Summer, this character who is so real in my mind and who I cried along with as the words poured from my soul onto my screen.
“I admired Summer's strength and ability to adapt,” says CiCi’s Theories. “I felt tied to her emotions,” Jennifer Murgia, author or Angel Star admits. And Tahlia Newland, author of Lethal Inheritance, remarks, “Summer is strong and smart in mind [. . .]”
Through her overwhelmingly horrendous past, Summer goes on more than just a physical journey in Phantom Universe, she goes on a psychological one as well; growing beyond her mute state to persevere and survive in a new world beyond the whip she’s so frightened of.

Now that the release date is here, I’m excited and terrified to share this story with everyone. I’m emotionally tied in every way to the words I’ve written, because they’re more than words. More than just a story on a page. Beyond the fictional aspects, there’s a real issue that needs to be addressed: human trafficking must be stopped. We shouldn’t sit idly by while this continues to plague us. Our world’s children—our nation’s children—are being affected. It’s time we take action!

Earlier this month Phantom Universe hit Barnes and Noble’s top 100 Best Selling list. I’ve decided to donate 10% of my sales from Phantom Universe, until the end of February, to the DNA Foundation.
“DNA hopes to help abolish modern day slavery, deter perpetrators, and free the many innocent and exploited victims. We are committed to forcing sex slavery out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Freedom is a basic human right and slavery is one of the greatest threats to that freedom. No one has the right to enslave another person.”

—From DNA Foundation’s Website
I ask that you spread the word to everyone you know. Look around on the DNA Foundation website and find a way to get involved in ending human trafficking. Take action today. Everyone has a voice—you have a voice. Will you have the courage to use it?

Book Review: Angelfire

Title: Angelfire
Author: Courtney Allison Moulton
Publisher: HarperCollins / Katherine Tegen Books (February 15th 2011)
Genre: YA/Paranormal YA
Series: Angelfire #1
Pages: 464
Source: Won from Courtney Allison Moulton

This debut, the first novel in a trilogy, is achingly romantic, terrifying, and filled with blistering action.

When seventeen-year-old Ellie starts seeing reapers - monstrous creatures who devour humans and send their souls to Hell - she finds herself on the front lines of a supernatural war between archangels and the Fallen and faced with the possible destruction of her soul.

A mysterious boy named Will reveals she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior, the only one capable of wielding swords of angelfire to fight the reapers, and he is an immortal sworn to protect her in battle. Now that Ellie's powers have been awakened, a powerful reaper called Bastian has come forward to challenge her. He has employed a fierce assassin to eliminate her - an assassin who has already killed her once.

While balancing her dwindling social life and reaper-hunting duties, she and Will discover Bastian is searching for a dormant creature believed to be a true soul reaper. Bastian plans to use this weapon to ignite the End of Days and to destroy Ellie's soul, ending her rebirth cycle forever. Now, she must face an army of Bastian's most frightening reapers, prevent the soul reaper from consuming her soul, and uncover the secrets of her past lives - including truths that may be too frightening to remember.
My $0.02
First of all, are angels the IT THING right now, or what?!  There have been so many awesome angel theme books debuting and there will be plenty more releasing this year!  By the looks of it – I’d say that angels are taking over!

Angelfire . . .  *hang on, let me gather my thoughts; swooning over Will!* Moulton delivers an amazing, refreshing, and new twist to angel mythology!  Like I mentioned above, angels are making it big this year so with that every book should have this something about them that will make readers want to pick the book up! For Angelfire, forget that something and just read the book!

Angelfire opens up with an action-packed scene – throwing you right into all the action! Ellie constantly has these nightmares of her fighting reapers and every time she has these dreams, something always seems so familiar about them; as if she’s been there before.  Little does she know she’s been reincarnated over and over again because she’s an ancient warrior who has the power to wield swords of angelfire to fight the reapers! As Ellie becomes more and more aware of these reapers, she starts seeing this mysterious boy appear wherever she is.  Turns out that this mysterious boy, Will, is her guardian; sworn to protect her at all times in battle.  At first, Ellie is very stubborn and wants to continue on with her teenage life as if none of it were true.  I totally agree with her there.  I mean, if there was a bomb dropped on me like that, I’d absolutely want nothing else but normal!  Before you know it, there’s nothing but Ellie and Will fighting off reapers here and there!

I very much enjoyed how Moulton focuses so much on Ellie and Will. When you’re reading, you can just tell that there’s just so much there between them.  When Will makes his appearance into Angelfire – he seems as if he’s the one that knows everything, which in an aspect he does.  But as Ellie becomes aware of her past, it actually turns out that she’s the one with all the power. For example, Will’s tattoos *swoon* -- Ellie was the one that had the power to put them there to protect him in battle, same thing with her Khopesh swords.  Ellie and Will’s relationship – I can’t put a finger on it or rather yet find the perfect word to describe it, but all I can say is, I want more of it! It’s so bittersweet; sad, happy, OMG, and more sad. All we get to see is Ellie’s point of view, but I would really enjoy reading from Will’s point of view as well.  I can’t imagine the pain and the agony that he goes through after all those decades of protecting her!  I also love the chemistry between Ellie and Will. How from one minute they’re having this close, intimate conversation to being guarded and hard as stone.  Oh! And don’t forget all the reaper fighting in between! :)

Speaking of reapers, are they scary, ugly, and frightening or what?!  Moulton does an incredible job with all the exciting, scary action-packed scenes!  This is one book that I can really see as a movie!  And maybe because my imaginary skills suck a little – so all the action scenes being played out in front of me won’t hurt so badly!  Bastian, you should be terrified of him!  He wants to kill Ellie, but every time he gets the chance, he doesn’t.  For me, I think Bastian seemed extremely intimidating because he doesn’t really say or do much but the way how his black energy rolled off of him – that is enough to send me running!  Ellie is caught in the middle of this deadly war between the archangels and the Fallen.  Each side has their warriors and they’re all super powerful.  I can’t wait to see how this is all going to play out!

I have to say, Moulton does a tremendous job at establishing a genuine relationship between Ellie and her mom.  It felt so real to me – a lot of sadness there.  I don’t know what it was but I enjoyed every second they had together.  Also, say I if you love Kate, Ellie’s BFF (biff)?! OMG!  She’s amazing! Like I would say to my sister, “I want a best friend like her!” Just the way how she was all around!  She is exactly the kind of best friend that I would love to have!

Angelfire rocked my socks off!  Moulton had me on the edge of my . . . bed (where I read most of the book)!  There were moments when I didn’t think that they’d make it or when I didn’t think that they’d survive!  I was holding my breath at certain times; my heart almost flat line!  Overall, Angelfire is a riveting, exhilarating, and O-M-G debut! All I have left to say is #TeamJustCallMeWill! :)

She grew up on a side of the road
Where the church bells ring and strong love grows
She grew up good
She grew up slow
Like American honey

Steady as a preacher
Free as a weed
Couldn't wait to get goin'
But wasn't quite ready to leave
So innocent, pure and sweet
American honey
When you're down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothin', nnothin' is goin' right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come runnin' to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

Go #TeamAide(a)ns!

So, if you are on twitter you should definitely include this in all of your tweets:
You know why? Because . . . you, because I said so! ;)

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Kristi Cook and Jennifer L. Armentrout would ell-ohh-vee-eee to see #TeamAide(a)ns be a trending topic on twitter, so if you have one, in every tweet of yours, if it isn't too much, would ya mind including it in there? Why Kristi Cook and Jennifer L. Armentrout? Well, in both of their debuts, their leading male characters go by the name of Aiden and Aidan! Hence the incredible one-of-a-kind twitter hashtag!

Now, you are probably wondering why the hashtag is totally weird looking and yes only the #TeamAide(a)ns part would actually be the hashtag but you know what? Who cares! This hashtag is AWESOME! :)

*GASP* Would ya look at that?! Both of their debuts begin with a H! ZOMg! This is just too much awesomeness for one to handle! ;)

Well, what are you waiting for? *Giggles* What are you waiting for? Totally reminds me of Scary Movie where she walks out of the building and she starts screaming WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! Do you remember that part? LOL :) Alrighty, totally off topic, but yeah WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR Tweeples?! Starting tweeting! Scoot! Get your fingers to typin'! *__*

GOOOOOO #TeamAide(a)ns!

  • Alibi by 30 Seconds to Mars
No warning sign, no alibi
We faded faster than the speed of light
Took our chance, crashed and burned
No, we'll never ever learn

I fell apart, but I got back up again,
And then I fell apart, but got back up again,

We both could see crystal clear,
That the inevitable end was near
Made our choice, a trial by fire,
To battle is the only way we feel alive
See her come down, through the clouds
I feel like a fool
I aint got nothing left to give
Nothing to lose

So come on Love, draw your swords
Shoot me to the ground
You are mine, I am yours
Lets not fuck around

Cause you are, the only one
Cause you are, the only one
Sparkling grey, through my own veins
Any more than a whisper
Any sudden movement of my heart
And I know, I know I'll have to
watch them pass away

Just get through this day

Give up your way, you could be anything,
Give up my way,
and lose myself,
not today
That's too much guilt to pay
