Being Dominated by My Own Characters by Tessa Bailey

Ah, Derek, I certainly missed you. In writing Protecting What’s Theirs, I got a chance to revisit my original dirty-mouthed alpha bad-boy, Lieutenant Derek Tyler. He holds a special place in my heart because he was the first hero that refused to conform to the parameters I’d set for myself as a writer, while writing heroes. When I told him to reign in the dominant streak that blazed to life around sassy, Nashville-born thief, Ginger Peet, he told me in no uncertain terms to fuck off.

I loved him for it.

Before I wrote Derek, I was paying way too much attention to the voice in my head, whispering what I should write, when what I needed to do was write what I secretly wanted to read. Derek was inspired by a cop I saw crossing the street for all of thirty seconds one afternoon in Queens. His walk was cocky and he didn’t smile…and thus Derek Tyler was born. He stormed into my psyche and demanded I write what he would say, not what I think he should say. I truly believe there is a part of every woman who wants a man to lose control around her, to the point where censoring himself is out of the question. Knowing you caused a man that ruthlessly controlled to forget himself is an aphrodisiac.

Looking back, I really feel as though that one brief encounter with the real-life cop might have clicked something inside me. As if seeing that type of alpha male in real life gave me permission to write it in a book, made it more realistic. Whatever it was, I’m grateful for it!

About the author:

Thank you for your interest in my books! I'm Tessa and I live in the crazy, loud, overcrowded borough of Brooklyn, New York. I love it here. This city is a constant source of inspiration, which is why I've decided to set my most recent books in the Line of Duty Series here.

I moved to New York when I was eighteen, the day after I graduated high school. Threw my suitcase in the back of a Chevrolet Cavalier and drove across the country to find my adventure. I'm still finding it, little by little.

Thank you for being a part of it.
